Tour duration: two days
We will start your adventure by heading to Baboon Islands, a group of three islands located 270 km inland of the River Gambia. These islands are part of a national forest and serve as a protected habitat for chimpanzees and other native Gambian wildlife. Take a boat trip and observe these fascinating creatures up close. The pristine wilderness of Baboon Islands offers a picturesque and serene environment, allowing you to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of Gambia's wildlife.
Next, explore the historic town of Georgetown, also known as Janjanbureh. This old British settlement, founded in 1832, is located on McCarthy Island in the hinterland of Gambia. Take a walk through the town and visit the old slave dungeon, a somber reminder of the region's history.
Then we will continue to the Wassu Stone Circle. This site is home to 11 stone circles and their associated frontal stones. These megalithic circles, believed to be burial mounds of kings and chiefs from ancient times, are over 1,200 years old. The tallest stone in Wassu stands at an impressive height of 2.59 meters. The builders of these monuments displayed great knowledge of local geology and technical ability in extracting and shaping the laterite stones without splitting or cracking them.
This is two days trip. We will spend the night in nice lodge.
